From the early Christian art in 2nd century, artists have used solid, tangible objects as stand-ins for what is hard to show in a painting - ideas, passions, senses. Symbols were also used to tell a whole story for a character.
Christian Saints are a remarkable example of this symbolism as they had to be recognized by the illiterate. Some of the greatest paintings in museums today tell stories through symbols and attributes of depicted figures.
This app is a quiz based on this iconography. Given the painting, try to guess which Saint was depicted based on which attributes you see. Additionally Guess Saint includes a collection of saints and their attributes.
